When you stand in front of your cupboard and have no idea what to wear, it’s probably one of the most frustrating things about being on a diet. Some of your favorite picks that fit a few weeks ago now hang loose and make you uncomfortable.
Is it worth considering purchasing new items while you are still a few kilos away from your goal weight? In a few weeks, you’ll probably be staring at your wardrobe, disappointed that you just spent money on new clothes that now hang loose, so it’s definitely not the time to invest in a new wardrobe.
So what do you do? You don’t want to spend large amounts of money on clothes that will inevitably not fit, nor do you want to feel rumpish in the same old baggy clothes. It certainly feels like a conundrum.
What to do, what to do!
Here are some tips for looking good while losing weight and not having to stress over baggy clothes:
- Clothes are important for looking and feeling good no matter where you are on your weight loss journey; they can make you feel slimmer and inspire your weight loss journey, so don’t keep reaching for those same old baggy clothes.
- Consider purchasing a few new items as a reward for reaching certain weight loss milestones.
- Concentrate on flattering, well-fitting basics like black pants with a bit of stretch and that can be easily taken in, and pair them with some mix-and-match tops.
- Consider A-line skirts, when they are a little loose, they don’t look as baggy as large pencil skirts.
- You don’t want to spend too much money on clothes that you know will be discarded 10 kilos later. Consider shopping at auctions, thrift stores, or even borrowing clothes from a smaller friend until you reach a certain point.
- As you lose weight, look for jeans and outfits made of elastane, Spandex, and Lycra that are stretchy and comfortable on your body.
- Consider investing in a new multi-purpose belt to help tighten pants or a dress. Even if the dress is a little baggy, a belt can completely transform it. Look for belts that will stretch with you.
- Wear long with short, as you don’t want to cut your torso in half. Longer blouses with shorter skirts or shorter blouses with longer skirts are both fitting.
- Sort through your wardrobe once a week to see what fits well right now and what can be altered to smaller sizes in the coming weeks as you progress and lose inches.
- Invest in clothes that can be changed later.
- Invest in clothes that can be easily changed.
- Look for online discounts, wait for big sales to buy basic clothing, and avoid splurging on single pieces. Choose reasonably priced, comfortable, and basic pieces. As you lose weight, treat yourself to some new clothes because they are a good investment when you are getting a lot of motivation back.
- Buy bathing suit tops and bottoms separately to ensure the best fit. Buy a solid color, such as black or navy, and splurge on the cover-up.
- Don’t buy something just because you can fit into it; instead, have a trusted friend tell you how it looks on you.
- Treat yourself to a manicure, pedicure, or facial.
- Set no goals for size. A 16 from one manufacturer may be an 18 or 14 from another.
- And don’t forget to get rid of those “fat” clothes! The sooner you start, the better!
